Hand Spun Yarns
Yarns are spun
to the specific thickness you require and can
be for projects worked on needle sizes 4mm and thicker,
although this can be dependent on suitability of the type
of yarn being spun. Having your yarn spun to order for you
means that you can take a commercial knitting pattern of
choice and then work it up in camel down/silk, for
example, giving you a totally unique finished garment that
no one else will have! Please note that the Rare
Breed/Silk Noil yarns are only spun as Chunky weight
(5.5/6mm needles).
Because my yarns are all
hand spun they are, by their very nature, prone to some
unevenness and it is therefore important that you work a
tension square before starting your project to ensure that
you do not need to make any adjustment to the needle size
recommended for the pattern you are using.
Orders for DOUBLE knit
yarns (4mm needles) will incur an additional 15% charge on
top of the list price owing to the significant amount of
time incurred in spinning a finer weight yarn.
Once you have decided on
the type of yarn you would like to order, PLEASE
TELEPHONE TO DISCUSS YOUR ORDER as the
individual weights of different fibres, i.e. if combined
with silk, will effect how much yarn you will need to
order when adapting to a commercial knitting pattern. It
is also helpful if you know the yardage required for your
pattern (usually specified on the band around machine spun
balls of wool). I always stress to my customers that it
is much safer to order too much yarn rather than too
little, owing to the fact that it could be difficult to
get an exact match spun up at a later date because of
either the actual spin or colour blend variation from one
batch to another of that particular fibre if, say, you
found you had run short by 200gms. For this reason, you
will never be stuck with any wool left over at the end of
you project because I will give a refund for any quantity
over 50gms, of a continuous length, that is surplus to
your needs.
For those hand spinners
out there who would like to have a go spinning these
fibres for themselves, I can also supply some of the raw
fibres and fleeces unspun.
